Debre Berhan University Delivers training to students

Debre Berhan University Research and Community Service Vice President Office delivered training for elementary school students on “Food Security and Nutrition Security”

in collaboration with Kossoye Development Program, which traces its origins to October of 1963 when Dennis Carlson first visited Kossoye village with students from the Haile Sellasie I Public Health College and Training Centre. The goal of the Kossoye Development Program was to help the University of Gondar faculty and students spread household gardening to as many neighborhoods and families as possible using community workshops, seed distributions, and school gardening and nutrition education. The Kossoye community, located 25 kilometers from the historic town of Gondar, proved to be an ideal rural laboratory and class room. Now KDP program is cascaded to Debre Berhan University and its surrounding.

The training was delivered by Mr.Getachew Amare, Lecturer at DBU. He briefed the importance of food security and food nutrition security. As to him food security exist when all people, at all times, have physical, social and economic access to sufficient, safe and nutritious food which meets their daily needs food preference for the people. Besides demonstration gardens are going to be built at the school and students at the elementary schools will be provided with vegetable seeds, tools, and gardening manuals.

Ato Gezahegn Abere ,Chacha Primary School Vice Principal, said that the objectives of the training is to capacitate students both in theoretical and practical knowledge about the production of vegetable and  gardening, and to improve the feeding  habit of the people in the area. He added that the school is very delighted in preparing the demonstration sites and plots. The training would be cascaded to the society around the school and the woreda at large.
