Ethiopian Economy is mainly dependent on the agricultural sector and the country’s future development is believed to continue being heavily dependent on this sector. To make the best use of this sector, efficient and effective mobilization, and utilization of agricultural resources is important. In spite of the key roles that the agriculture sector plays in the national economy and the huge potential of the country has for agricultural development, the performance of the sector is not yet satisfactory. Hence, producing skill manpower capable, competent graduates in the field of Agricultural Economics is instrumental.
The Department of Agricultural Economics offers an enhanced learning experience to qualified, academically-talented students and Agricultural economists apply theories and principles of economics to better understand and optimize agricultural markets. Agricultural economists address problems ranging from clean air and water to alleviation of poverty. They examine relationships between supply and demand using data, statistics and market trends. Job opportunities in agricultural economics exist in many areas, including agribusiness management, finance, policy, natural resource economics, economic development policy and Economic analysis or Rural Entrepreneurship.
The Department opened in 2011 E.C. with 6 staffs (4 MSc and 2 PhD holders) to mitigate the manpower shortage in the country. Currently, in our department we have 2 PhD, 9 master's degree staffs.
