Debre Berhan University Senate Approves Legislation for Applied Science University Designation

DEBRE BIRHAN, ETHIOPIA [ 29 July, 2025] – The Senate of Debre Berhan University (DBU) today announced the approval of new legislation formalizing its designation as an applied science university. This decision aligns with the Ministry of Education's directive for institutional differentiation, positioning DBU as a leading institution focused on practical, skills-based education. 

During the Senate session, Dr. Asmare Melese, Chairman of the Senate and President of DBU, underscored the importance of adapting university governance to reflect the unique mission of an applied science institution. He emphasized the necessity for the legislation to embody the fundamental principles of applied science education, including industry collaboration, experiential learning, and innovation-driven research. 

This legislation marks a pivotal moment for Debre Berhan University, stated Dr. Asmare. It provides a clear framework for DBU to excel in delivering relevant, hands-on education that meets the evolving needs of our community and the nation. 

The approved legislation underwent a rigorous review process, including multiple levels of evaluation and discussion prior to its final consideration by the Senate. The unanimous approval signifies a strong commitment from DBU leadership to embrace its new role and to create a dynamic and impactful learning environment for its students. 

The legislation takes effect immediately from the date of approval. Debre Berhan University will now begin implementing the new governance structure and aligning its academic programs, research initiatives, and partnerships to fully realize its potential as an applied science university.
