Dean’s Message
It
is my great pleasure and privilege to welcome you to the College of Social
Sciences and Humanities, a college committed to producing knowledgeable,
skilled, ethical, innovative, and socially responsible graduates who can
meaningfully contribute to the development of our country and the wider world.
As
an Applied University, our institution is guided by a strong commitment to
connecting knowledge with practice. Accordingly, the College of Social Sciences
and Humanities recognizes that education needs to be more than a theoretical
understanding. We teach, conduct research, engage with the community and
provide professional training to respond to real social, cultural, economic, environmental
and governance challenges facing our communities.
Our
College is a convergence of disciplines that are essential to understanding
society and steering sustainable development. Amharic Language and Literature,
Geography and Environmental Studies, Sociology, Psychology, History and
Heritage management, Civics and Ethical Studies, English Language and
Literature, Journalism and Communication are among the fields explored to
produce graduates who are critical problem solvers, effective communicators,
collaborative workers and practical solution developers.
Our
academic programs are practice-oriented and competency-based, underpinned by
fieldwork, internships, research, community-based projects, digital
technologies, professional engagement, and experiential learning. We aim to
provide an educational setting in which students are able to transform
knowledge into practical skills and meaningful solutions.
Research and innovation, too, are central to our
mission. We promote problem-driven, interdisciplinary and policy-relevant
research that responds to the needs of communities and institutions. The
challenges we focus on in our research are contemporary ones, such as
sustainable development, climate and environmental change, urbanization,
governance, peace and security, culture and identity, social transformation,
education, livelihoods and digital society.
We also understand that the university’s
contribution should reach beyond the campus. The College endeavors to promote
better collaboration with government authorities, communities, schools, private
organizations, development partners, research institutions and other
stakeholders through community engagement and strategic alliances. These
partnerships generate opportunities to convert knowledge and research into
practical solutions and societal impact.
To
our students, I encourage you to take full advantage of the opportunities that
come your way. Be curious, creative, ethical, collaborative and a lifelong
learner. Develop your practical, digital, communication, leadership and problem
solving skills, and your academic knowledge. It is not just the degree you get
but also the positive impact you bring to society that will determine your
success.
I
want to thank our faculty and staff for their dedication and professionalism.
Together we will continue to build on academic excellence, research,
innovation, student success, institutional partnerships and a culture of
continuous improvement.
Our
long-term goal is to make the College a premier hub for applied social science
and humanities education, research, innovation, and social transformation.
Our
dedication is as follows:
Putting knowledge into practice
Research into solutions
Education into Opportunities
Innovation for impact
I
invite all members of our College community and our partners to join us in
realizing this vision.
Welcome to the College of Social Sciences and
Humanities. Together, let us transform knowledge into meaningful societal
impact.
