Midwifery

Message from the Head of the Midwifery Department

Dear Visitors,

It is my great pleasure to welcome you to the Department of Midwifery at Debre Berhan University, Asrat Woldeyes Health Science Campus. Our department is dedicated to preparing highly competent, compassionate, and ethical midwives who are capable of providing high-quality, evidence-based maternal and newborn care across a variety of settings.

Midwifery plays a pivotal role in improving maternal and child health outcomes an urgent priority both nationally and globally. In alignment with the Ethiopian Ministry of Health's priorities and the National Harmonized Midwifery Curriculum, our undergraduate and postgraduate training programs are structured to meet the needs of our communities while upholding the highest standards of professional care. We ensure our students are equipped with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes needed to serve across the reproductive health continuum from pre-pregnancy through childbirth and the postpartum period. Our curriculum is benchmarked against the International Confederation of Midwives (ICM) Global Standards for Midwifery Education and the Essential Competencies for Midwifery Practice (2024). It integrates current evidence, ethical and cultural sensitivity, and interprofessional collaboration to produce graduates who are ready to meet today’s complex health challenges. We also work toward the realization of the ICM Professional Framework, which emphasizes midwifery philosophy, gender equity, leadership, research, and the enabling environment necessary for quality care.

We take pride in our strong academic faculty, modern skills development laboratory, and meaningful community engagement. Our students benefit from simulation-based training, clinical placements at affiliated hospitals, and student-centered learning approaches that promote critical thinking and professionalism. We are also actively involved in research that addresses maternal and neonatal health priorities in Ethiopia, contributing to policy and practice improvement.

As the Head of the Midwifery Department, I am committed to fostering an inclusive, supportive, and excellence-driven environment where students, faculty, and stakeholders collaborate to advance the health and rights of women, newborns, families, and communities.

Thank you for your interest in our department. We invite you to explore our programs, partnerships, and research activities. Together, we can strengthen midwifery in Ethiopia and beyond.
