HOD Message
"Civil
Engineering is more than design and construction — it is a profession of
impact. Whether improving access to clean water, building safe roads, or
strengthening disaster resilience, our students lead the future of
infrastructure development in Ethiopia and beyond." — Head of Department, Civil Engineering |
Infrastructure is the foundation that
supports daily life - access to drinking water and shelter from weather, roads,
railways, airports, hospitals, and schools. Civil engineering concerns the
conception, design, construction and maintenance of large public and private
projects, including bridges, highways, tunnels, airports, dams, and water
treatment systems.
In a developing country like Ethiopia, civil
engineering plays a crucial role in economic development and improving the
living standards of citizens. Infrastructure development attracts investment
and tourism, making this discipline essential for national progress.
The Department of Civil Engineering was
established in 2009 G.C., in response to Ethiopia's rapidly growing demand for
infrastructure development and professional engineers capable of implementing
practical and sustainable solutions. From its inception, the department has
focused on practice-driven education and community-oriented innovation.
