The Marketing Management Program is founded on the belief that marketing
is a strategic function that creates value for customers, organizations, and
society. In the twenty-first century, rapid technological advancement, digital
transformation, globalization, and changing consumer behavior have made
marketing one of the most important drivers of organizational competitiveness
and sustainable economic development. Organizations require marketing
professionals who possess analytical, innovative, ethical, and leadership
competencies to respond effectively to dynamic business environments.
The program recognizes that production alone cannot ensure organizational
success. The creation, communication, delivery, and exchange of value through
effective marketing are equally essential for achieving customer satisfaction
and long-term organizational performance. Marketing integrates business
functions by connecting organizations with customers, understanding market
needs, developing competitive strategies, and creating sustainable
relationships with stakeholders.
As Ethiopia continues its economic transformation and private sector
development, there is an increasing demand for competent marketing
professionals who can contribute to business growth, entrepreneurship, public
service delivery, and national development. The program therefore aims to
produce graduates who possess sound theoretical knowledge, practical skills,
ethical values, digital competencies, and problem-solving abilities to address
contemporary marketing challenges in both domestic and international markets.
The philosophy of the program is based on outcome-based education,
student-centered learning, experiential learning, and continuous quality
improvement. It integrates classroom instruction with practical learning
through case studies, research projects, internships, industry linkages,
community engagement, and the application of modern marketing technologies. The
program encourages creativity, critical thinking, innovation, teamwork,
communication, and evidence-based decision-making.
The Marketing Management Program prepares graduates to undertake
professional roles in marketing management, digital marketing, sales
management, brand management, customer relationship management, marketing
research, advertising, public relations, supply chain marketing,
entrepreneurship, and business consultancy across public, private, and
non-profit organizations. Graduates are also equipped to pursue lifelong
learning, professional certification, postgraduate education, and research.
The program is committed to producing competent, innovative, ethical, and
socially responsible marketing professionals who contribute to organizational
excellence, customer satisfaction, sustainable economic growth, and national
development while upholding professional integrity and global best practices.
Rationale of the Program:
Ethiopia's on-going economic transformation, market liberalization, and
increasing integration into the global economy have created significant
opportunities and challenges for businesses. The implementation of the Home-grown
Economic Reform Agenda and the Ten-Year Development Plan (2021–2030) has
expanded private sector participation, encouraged investment, promoted
entrepreneurship, and strengthened competition across various sectors of the
economy. As a result, organizations increasingly require marketing
professionals who can identify market opportunities, create customer value,
build competitive advantage, and contribute to sustainable economic
development.
In today's business environment, organizational success depends not only
on the production of quality goods and services but also on the ability to
understand customer needs, develop innovative marketing strategies, build
strong brands, utilize digital technologies, and respond effectively to rapidly
changing market conditions. Marketing has therefore become a strategic function
that supports business growth, competitiveness, export promotion, employment
creation, and national economic development.
Despite the growing importance of marketing, Ethiopia continues to face a
shortage of qualified marketing professionals equipped with the competencies
required by modern organizations. Many public, private, and non-profit
institutions require graduates who possess practical knowledge and professional
skills in strategic marketing, digital marketing, marketing analytics, customer
relationship management, branding, sales management, marketing research, and
business communication.
The increasing demand for these competencies has been driven by
technological advancement, digitalization, market competition, expanding
entrepreneurship, and the growth of service and manufacturing industries.
Addressing this shortage requires a modern, competency-based academic program
that prepares graduates to meet current and future labour market needs.
The Marketing Management Program is designed in accordance with the
principles of Outcome-Based Education (OBE). The curriculum focuses on
clearly defined Program Learning Outcomes (PLOs) that enable graduates to
demonstrate the knowledge, practical skills, professional attitudes, and
ethical values expected by employers and society. Through student-centred
learning, industry engagement, internships, research, case-based instruction,
project work, and continuous assessment, students develop competencies that can
be directly applied in professional practice.
The program emphasizes experiential learning, innovation,
entrepreneurship, digital competence, communication, leadership, teamwork,
critical thinking, and lifelong learning. Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI),
informed by stakeholder feedback, labor market analysis, and industry
participation, ensures that the curriculum remains relevant, responsive, and
aligned with national development priorities and international best practices.
Program Justification
The establishment and continuous improvement of the Marketing Management
Program are justified by the increasing demand for competent marketing
professionals capable of supporting Ethiopia's economic transformation and
organizational competitiveness. The program contributes to the development of
skilled human capital by producing graduates who can create customer value,
improve organizational performance, promote entrepreneurship, enhance business
competitiveness, and contribute to sustainable economic and social development.
By integrating theoretical knowledge with practical experience and emphasizing
innovation, ethics, and digital competence, the program prepares graduates to
succeed in diverse professional environments and adapt to future changes in the
marketing profession.
Beginning
in the 2024/2025 academic year, the Ministry of Education of Ethiopia has
embarked on a transformative national initiative to enhance graduate quality
across all undergraduate disciplines. This initiative represents a fundamental
shift in educational philosophy, emphasizing the integration of both core
(discipline-specific) and generic (transferable) competencies in academic
programs. The initiative recognizes that twenty-first century graduates must
possess not only specialized knowledge but also the adaptability, critical
thinking abilities, and professional skills necessary to thrive in rapidly
evolving work environments.
Graduates of B.A. in Marketing Management can
go on to a wide range of marketing and business careers in the commercial,
public and voluntary sectors. As a marketing Management graduate will be able
