1. General Information
The Department of
Economics was first launched in 2005 with the objective of addressing the
country`s trained human power shortage in the field of Economics. The program
provides instruction on economic theories and a rigorous foundation in the
analytical tools and applied areas of economics, relying on mathematical and
statistical techniques.
As per the new policy of
the Ethiopian government to mitigate the human power shortage in this field of
study, the department aspires to produce qualified citizens who are going to
participate in research and development, teaching and consultancy service that
the economy demands and thereby contribute towards the fulfillment of the
development policies and strategies of the country. Therefore, its plan is to
educate and train students in this field of specialization.
Currently the department provides training for 150 undergraduate
students 49 2nd year, 81 3rd year,
and 20 4th year (graduating class).
M1: To produce
knowledgeable, skilled and attitudinally matured graduates for the job
market and entrepreneurship by providing practice-oriented education.
M2: To enhance and promote applied research focusing on innovation and
technology
transfer to create sustainable and knowledge based industries and societies.
M3: To provide need based and reliable consultancy, short-term training, and
community
services to the society in the in the field of economics.

§ Exceptional educational experience by
integrating, theory, application, and practitioner networks ensured.
§ The development of an understanding
of micro econometrics and macro econometrics theories and their application to
economic sub-fields.

economists capable of contributing to the realization of the country’s
development objectives.
§ Graduates become proactive,
goal-oriented, optimistic, and professionally competent in the labour market.
§ Making department research source of
innovation and a critical means for improving private and public sector
institutions’ cost-effectiveness and performance.

The department is a program of
study that normally takes four years (including freshman program) to complete
for full time regular students and five to six years for part time students.
The department will admit if the student:
§ Meet the entry requirements of
higher education institutions stated by Ministry of Education.
In particular;
§
Has
successfully completed preparatory level schools and passed entrance examination
for the University prepared by Ministry of Education or has completed and
passed level four (Level V) college COC exam.
§ Has successfully completed freshman
program and assigned to the department on a regular program base by the
University, or
§ Has completed BA/BSc in any field
of study
