The
Department of Management is one of the six academic departments in the College
of Business and Economics at Debre Berhan University. The Department offers
quality, practical oriented education and undertakes Problem Solving researches
in the discipline of management general, with special focus on Human Resource
Management, Organizational Behavior, Leadership, Marketing Management,
Operations Management, Materials Management, Financial Management,
Entrepreneurship and Project Management and so forth.
The Department aims to equip its graduates with the theoretical background and managerial insight so as to fit them as professionals competent in managerial expertise, able to make rational decisions and administrate human and material resources effectively; to plan organizational strategies sound and respond adequately to the challenges posed by a dynamic and competitive business landscape.
Graduates
from the Department of Management can pursue various professional and
entrepreneurial career opportunities such as:
Ø Management
trainees, officers and experts in banks, insurance companies and other
financial institutions.
Ø Public
and private organization‘s human resource officers and managers.
Ø Marketing
officers, brand and sales managers and business development professionals.
Ø Operations,
logistics, materials/supply chain function:
Ø Project
coordinators, planners and project managers in development and business
organizations.
Ø Entrepreneurs
who set up their own start-up business, small and medium enterprises.
Ø All
researchers, consultants and the remaining postgraduate students in management
and related disciplines.
The
curriculum of the Department allows the students to leave the Department at the
time of graduation and immediately find employment, or become self-employed
through entrepreneurship, or to proceed to higher studies, under graduate and
doctoral studies.
Debre
Berhan University, College of Business and Economics and Department of
Management, in collaboration establish some facilities aimed at effective
teaching, learning and research such as:
Ø Lecture
rooms and at least one smart classroom, which are adequately equipped.
Ø University
library with sufficient reading area, printed books as well as electronic books
and electronic resources.
Ø Computer
labs and IT resource rooms accessible to students and staff.
Ø A
business incubation center for students who want to learn more about
entrepreneurship and start-ups.
Ø An
enterprise simulation center for work processes, practical training and
experiential learning.
Ø Office amenities are needed for academic staff to enable the advisors, researchers and consultants to work effectively.
Department Establishment
Debre
Berhan University was established in 2007 (1999 E.C.) by Council of Ministers
of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia as new generation of public
Universities in Ethiopia. The Department of Management was established together
with the Debre Berhan University and College of Business & Economics and
thus one of the leading academic departments.
Since
its inception, the Department has experienced consistent expansion in
enrollment, academic staff profile and programs as it moves from its original
undergraduate program to graduate studies and including Master of Business
Administration (MBA), Master of Project Management programs and Doctor of
Business Administration (DBA) in response to the region‘s and country‘s need
for higher level education in management.
The Department has been reviewing and refining its curriculum on an ongoing basis over the years, the latest in October 2023 to ensure that it was in line with the national requirements of quality assurance, outcome-based education, as well as the needs and requirements of the employers, industries and communities it caters to.

To
be among the top academic departments in management teaching research and
community services in the country leading towards excellence in 2030 by producing
competent, ethical and innovative managers and entrepreneurs for socio-economic
development of the Country.
Consistent with the overall aim of Debre
Berhan University, the Department of Management is pursuing the subsequent
department mission:
M1: To equip informed, skillful and
attitudinally matured management graduates for employment and entrepreneurship
through practice-focused education.
M2: To improve and facilitate applied
research in the area of innovation and knowledge transfer, so as to develop
sustainable, knowledge-based enterprises and organizations.
M3: Build strategic alliance with industries, government offices and community partners to facilitate practice-oriented management education, research and community service.

Curriculum-Related Information
Ø Curriculum
foundation: Management Curriculum, being revised 2023, and designed based on
outcome-based education (OBE), in conformity with the requirements for national
accreditation.
Ø Delivery modes: Regular,
Extension, and Continuing programs for Bachelor level.
Ø Credit system: 1
credit hour= notional 40 hours of Student Learning Time (S.L.T) (for e.g. a
3-credit hour course has S.L.T of approximately 120 hours).
Ø Admission
(Regular): Through completion of preparatory studies as well as passing in
aggregate and required minimum marks of the Ethiopian Higher Education Entrance
Examination (EHEE) or an equivalent examination.
Ø Admission
(Continuing Education): Provided for on the basis of meet the prescribed pass
mark in the DBU entrance examination.
Ø Quality assurance:
Provided via a Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) cycle unit-level review
every semester.
The Department of Management, on a continuous
basis, setup and participates in various academic and professional development
activities in order to enhance the teaching-learning process and enhance its
collaboration with industry and the community. Such activities include, but are
not limited to:
Ø
There are one or two curriculum review and
modification workshops every year including for the current BA Degree in
Management curriculum.
Ø
Staff workshops on teaching and learning,
research methodology and outcome-based education (OBE).
Ø
Guest lectures/seminars from industry
professionals and alumni.
Ø
Entrepreneurship and business plan competitions
together with the business incubation center.
Ø
Participated in community outreach and provided
consultancy services to local companies, cooperatives and government agencies.
