Debre Berhan University's Department of Food Engineering, under the College of Engineering, held an "Internal Validation Workshop for the National Accreditation of the Food Engineering Program." The event was attended by the University President, the Vice President for Academic Affairs, internal evaluators, education quality experts, college faculty, and students.
Dr. Getnet Ashenafi, Vice President for Academic Affairs, congratulated the department for reaching the internal evaluation stage. He noted that while the Asrat Woldeyes Health Science Campus has already secured accreditation for programs like Anesthesia, Midwifery, Medicine, and Nursing, this milestone for Food Engineering serves as an encouraging platform for other colleges to exchange experiences.
Debre Berhan University President Dr. Asmare Melese officially opened the program. He emphasized that the success of the Health Science Campus should serve as a blueprint for other departments. He urged other colleges to take lessons from the Food Engineering Department’s rigorous preparation and work ethics.
Tekletsadik Shiwarke, Dean of the College of Engineering and program coordinator, explained that the university has set a strategic direction for all departments to achieve national accreditation. Currently, nine programs under the College of Engineering are undergoing the accreditation process.
Before submitting documentation to the Education and Training Authority (ETA)—the national licensing body—the department presented its work to internal evaluators. Experts from the Health Science Campus and quality assurance offices provided feedback.
During the workshop, ten papers were presented and reviewed. Participants raised various questions and constructive comments.
Dr. Asmare Melese thanked the evaluators and urged the department to prioritize the feedback received to strengthen their final submission. Dr. Getnet Ashenafi added that while the current data is excellent, the department must integrate the suggested corrections to solidify their standing before the final national review. The program concluded with closing remarks from the presenters addressing the feedback provided throughout the day.
