Background

The Mehal-Meda Campus is a vital extension of Debre Berhan University (DBU), established with a dedicated focus on specialized rural development and technological transformation.

The campus is situated in the North Shewa Zone of the Amhara Region, located 152 kilometers northwest of DBU's main campus in Debre Berhan, and approximately 282 kilometers from Ethiopia's capital, Addis Ababa.

Its establishment was a testament to strong community support. The local administration and the people of Menz Gera and Mehal-Meda played a crucial role by freely offering 100 hectares of land for its construction. The foundation stone was laid by the former President of Debre Berhan University, Dr. Nigus Tadesse, along with Mr. Tadesse T/Tsadik, who was the Head of the North Shewa Zone Administration at the time on 12 June, 2022. The construction officially began after receiving approval from the plan commission of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia.

Mehal-Meda Campus was founded as part of DBU, an applied science university, with a clear mandate to address the socio-economic and developmental needs of its surrounding community.

The core purpose of the campus is to explore and support the development of the community in key areas through academics, research, technology transfer, and community engagement. Its focus areas include Rural Development, High-Land Agriculture, Tourism, Commerce, Veterinary Science, Informatics and Artificial Intelligence (AI).

The campus is working with a strong and modern vision: to be a modern campus in digital transformation by building a technology-enabled university community. This vision drives its commitment to leveraging advanced disciplines like AI to contribute significantly to the local and national economy.

The Mehal-Meda Campus commenced its operations in February 2017 E.C. (2025) by enrolling an initial cohort of 775 remedial students. The campus staff at that time included 41 instructors and over 90 administrative personnel. Following the successful completion of the national remedial examination by the initial cohort, the campus transitioned its academic activities to focus on regular students.

The campus is prepared for expansion, having finalized the development of curricula for eight new degree programs. These new programs cover strategic fields essential to the campus's mission: Rural Development, Commerce, Veterinary Science, Informatics, and Artificial Intelligence (AI). These programs are ready to be fully operational for the currently admitted regular students.
