Debre Berhan (August 11, 2026) — Debre Berhan
University (DBU), in collaboration with Partners in Education Ethiopia, has
conducted a strategic consultative meeting aimed at jointly implementing
multi-sectoral initiatives focused on quality education, health, and food
security. The project targets students and parents at the selected pilot
institution, Biruh Tesfa School.
Delivering the welcome address, Asmare Melese
(Dr.), President of Debre Berhan University, recalled the pre-existing
partnership between the university and the organization and expressed DBU's
full support for the newly introduced development concept. Dr. Asmare affirmed
that beyond providing material resources and technical expertise, the
university is committed to co-designing and executing joint projects to achieve
impactful and sustainable results.
For his part, Mr. Yihalem Abebe, General Manager of
Partners in Education Ethiopia, explained that the organization is a
Canada-based charity founded by Ethiopians. He noted that while the foundation
currently operates across various zones in the Amhara Region, it plans to
expand its operational footprint to other regions across the country in the
future.
Mr. Yihalem further highlighted that the primary
objective of the initiative is to build and empower educational institutions by
leveraging local capacities surrounding schools. Explaining why Biruh Tesfa
School was selected as a demonstration site, he stated that DBU will actively
participate across all phases—from infrastructural development to academic
research, training, and technical assistance—to establish an exemplary model
for other institutions.
During the session, Mr. Feredi Merha-Tsidik,
director at Partners in Education Ethiopia, presented a working document
outlining the joint action plans and respective institutional roles of both
parties. The presentation was followed by an interactive discussion where
participant questions and feedback were addressed by the general manager, Mr.
Yihalem Abebe.
In his closing remarks, President Asmare Melese
(Dr.) highlighted that the project has already commenced healthcare
interventions in collaboration with the Asrat Woldeyes Health Sciences Campus,
specifically launching eye screening services. He concluded by reassuring
stakeholders that planned initiatives in other focus areas will be rolled out
progressively, with both organizations working in close coordination to address
operational challenges as they arise.
